Demographics of Aechmophorus Grebes Killed in Three Mortality Events in California

چکیده
Oil spills in coastal California are a conservation concern for many seabird species and are among the top threats to wintering populations of Aechmophorus grebes. Western Grebes A. occidentalis and Clark’s Grebes A. clarkii are sister taxa that breed in freshwater lakes throughout western North America and predominantly spend the nonbreeding season in the nearshore marine environment, where they are vulnerable to oiling (Storer & Nuechterlein 1992). In California, Western Grebes are one of the main species impacted by oil spills (California Department of Fish and Game [CDFG] 1969a,b; Straughan 1970, 1971; American Trader Trustee Council 2001; Hampton et al. 2003; Carter 2003; CDFG et al. 2004; CDFG & US Fish and Wildlife Service [USFWS] 2008; Humple 2009; Oiled Wildlife Care Network [OWCN] / PRBO Conservation Science unpubl. data). Understanding demographic parameters — such as sex and age ratios — of impacted populations is critical to assessing immediate and potential long-term effects of oil DEMOGRAPHICS OF AECHMOPHORUS GREBES KILLED IN THREE MORTALITY EVENTS IN CALIFORNIA

Western and Clark's grebes use novel strategies for running on water.
Few vertebrates run on water. The largest animals to accomplish this feat are western and Clark's grebes (Aechmophorus occidentalis and Aechmophorus clarkii). These birds use water running to secure a mate during a display called rushing. Grebes weigh an order of magnitude more than the next largest water runners, basilisk lizards (Basilicus basiliscus), and therefore face a greater challenge t...
متن کاملCitizen Science Reveals an Extensive Shift in the Winter Distribution of Migratory Western Grebes
Marine waterbirds have shown variable trends in abundance over the past four decades with some species displaying steep declines along the Pacific coast from British Columbia through California. One of the most dramatic changes has been that of western grebes (Aechmophorus occidentalis) in the Salish Sea. This region was a former core of the species wintering distribution but they have become i...
متن کاملComparison of Aerial and Boat-based Survey Methods for Marbled Murrelets Brachyramphus Marmoratus and Other Marine Birds
We compared density estimates for marine birds off central California from simultaneous aerial and boat-based surveys, with a special emphasis on Marbled Murrelets Brachyramphus marmoratus. We surveyed 44 eight-kilometer transects in nearshore waters of Monterey Bay, California, from December 2005 through March 2006. We found that density estimates of all birds combined and of Western Aechmopho...

Anderson, T.W., M.A. Tiffany and S.H. Hurlbert. 2007. Stratification, sulfide, worms, and decline of the Eared Grebe (Podiceps nigricollis) at the Salton Sea, California. Lake Reserv. Manage. 23:500–517. Over the last half century the Salton Sea has been an important migratory stopover site for the Eared Grebe (Podiceps nigricollis). However, in recent years there have been sporadic mass mortal...
متن کاملEstimation and testing of parameters in Richards growth model for western grebes.
Growth rate coefficients for dark- and light-phase western grebes (Aechmophorus occidentalis) are compared with the Richards' growth model. The statistical assumptions necessary to estimate and test parameters are carefully scrutinized. Autocorrelations of the residuals are removed with an autoregressive model, and heterogeneity of variance of the residuals is corrected with weighted least squa...
